FACTS/MYTHOLOGY

Ganesha is a famous Hindu god worshipped all over India and is one of the five prime gods along with Lord Shiva, Maa Durga, Brahma and Lord Vishnu. Also referred to as Ganapati and Vinayaka, Ganesha is identified by the elephant head, broken tusk and big tusk. He is traditionally considered to be the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati. It is said that Maa Parvati created him out of some of the dirt of her body and kept him to guard her while she was taking a bath. He was ordered to not let anybody enter. When Lord Shiva saw that a stranger was not letting him enter he got furious. In anger and rage, he cut off the head of this stranger. When Maa Parvati learnt about this she got very angry. Shiva, on learning the truth sent out his troops or the 'gana' to get a head of any creature that they found first facing the direction of the North. They brought back the head of an elephant which Shiva joined with the head of this boy and returned him to life. He also blessed him that he would be worshipped by people before every new venture. He is worshipped as the lord of success and the remover of all obstacles from every endeavor. He is also worshipped for knowledge and wisdom. It is considered auspicious to seek his blessings before embarking on a good endeavor. He is too humble and thus rides one of the smallest creatures in the world, the mouse. His big ears hear all our prayers to him and his broken tusk symbolizes the sacrifice he made to write the Mahabharata when Vyasa was dictating it.

FESTIVALS/EVENTS/GATHERINGS

The major festival which is celebrated in the temple is Ganesha Chaturthi. It is a delight to see the idol beautifully decorated with tons of flowers. Elaborate rituals are followed and many people come to visit and get blessings from the Lord. It is a 10-day festival celebrated in the month of August-September, during the Hindu month called Bhadrapada.
